Psychiatric-evaluation

Understanding your mental health with clarity and compassion.

A psychiatric evaluation is a structured conversation and assessment carried out with my patients to understand their mental‑health status and determine the best way to help them. It starts with the exploration of your  current thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, as well as any symptoms you have been experiencing (like anxiety, low mood, trouble sleeping, or difficulty concentrating). I will also explore the timeline of these symptoms—when they began, how often they occur, and how severe they feel—and ask how they impact daily life, relationships, work, or school.

In addition to the personal narrative, I gather background information about medical history, past mental‑health treatments, family history of mental‑illness, substance use, and any major life events or stressors (such as loss, trauma, or major transitions). I may use brief questionnaires or rating scales to quantify certain symptoms and sometimes perform simple cognitive or neurological checks (such as memory tests) to rule out other causes. Throughout the interview, I observe your speech, mood, facial expressions, and overall demeanor to pick up on non‑verbal cues that can provide additional insight.

By integrating all of this information, I can form a diagnostic impression, identify any underlying mental‑health conditions, assess their severity, and discuss potential treatment options. This might include therapy, medication, lifestyle changes, or referrals to other specialists. The evaluation also serves as a baseline for future monitoring, allowing my patient and myself to track progress over time and adjust the care plan as needed.
